Solving the Case of Missing Funnel Profits: A Guide to Order Bumps, Upsells, and Downsells

March 03, 20266 min read

Hello lovely.

If you’ve been peering into the world of online business for more than five minutes, you’ve probably heard people throwing around words like "Upsells," "Downsells," and "Order Bumps" as if everyone naturally knows what they mean.

It can feel a bit like walking into a room where everyone is speaking a secret language, can’t it?

You might hear someone say they’ve added an upsell to their checkout page, when they actually mean an order bump. Or they’ll talk about a downsell strategy when they’re really just describing a cheaper version of their main offer.

If you’ve felt a little muddled by it all, I want you to know: you’re not alone. The confusion is completely understandable. All three of these are simply ways to help a customer who is already excited about your work find even more value. They all happen during your "investigation" (what the tech-wizards call a funnel), and they all involve offering a little something extra.

But they work differently, they appear at different moments, and they each have a special job to do. Once we look at the clues, you’ll see how they can work together to build your business without ever feeling pushy or overwhelming. Let's begin...

Post Audio Overview

🔎Clue #1: What Is An Order Bump?

Think of an Order Bump as that little tray of treats near the till at the supermarket. You’re already there to buy your groceries, and you see something small and helpful that you didn’t know you needed until that very second.

In your online investigation, an order bump lives directly on your checkout page. It’s usually a tiny box with a tick-box next to it. Your buyer hasn't clicked "buy" yet...

They’re just about to!

The Key Features:

  • Low Friction: They can add it to their order with one simple click.

  • The Price: It’s usually a small "impulse" amount, perhaps between $7 and $37.

  • The Job: It should be a perfect companion to what they are already buying.

Example: If someone is buying your guide on "How to Grow Roses," the order bump might be a simple "Printable Pruning Calendar." It’s a lovely little extra that makes their life easier right away.

🔎Clue #2: What Is An Upsell?

This is where many people get a bit stuck, lovely. An Upsell happens after the customer has already said "Yes" and clicked the buy button.

Their payment has been processed, and they’ve officially become a customer. But before they reach the "Thank You" page, you show them one more thing. Because they’ve already trusted you with their details, they can often add this new offer to their order with just one more click.

The Key Features:

  • The Timing: It’s a standalone page that appears after payment.

  • The Price: Usually higher than the main product. If your first offer was $47, the upsell might be $97 or even more.

  • The Job: It offers a "Next Level" solution. It might be more access to you, a deeper course, or a "done-for-you" version of what they just bought.

🔎Clue #3: What Is A Downsell?

A Downsell is like a safety net. It only appears if someone looks at your Upsell and decides, "No, thank you, that’s not for me right now."

Instead of just letting them go straight to the end, you offer them a different path. Maybe the upsell was too expensive, or maybe it was just too much work for them at this stage. The downsell offers a simpler or more affordable way to get a similar result.

The Key Features:

  • The Timing: It only shows up if the Upsell is declined.

  • The Job: To capture the interest of someone who wanted to say yes but needed a smaller commitment.

Example: If your Upsell was a 6-week coaching program for $500 and they say no, the Downsell might be a recorded version of that program for $197. It’s still helpful, but much more accessible!

🕵️‍♀️Seeing the Sales Funnel Flow

Visualising the Sales Funnel flow helps clear up the false leads. Imagine your customer walking down a path:

  1. The Sales Page: They decide they like what you’re offering.

  2. The Checkout Page: They enter their details. (This is where the Order Bump lives!)

  3. The Click: They hit "Complete Purchase."

  4. The Upsell Page: They see your "Next Level" offer.

  5. The Decision:

    • If they say Yes, they go to the Thank You Page.

    • If they say No, they see the Downsell Page.

  6. The Thank You Page: They arrive safely at their downloads.

🕵️‍♀️Why This Matters for Your Calm Business

Understanding these differences isn't just about using the right labels, lovely. It’s about being strategic and kind to your buyers.

  • Order Bumps work because they are effortless.

  • Upsells work because the customer is already in "buying mode."

  • Downsells work because they show you’ve listened to their "no" and offered a gentler option.

When you use all three together, you aren't just "selling." You are building a path that meets your customers exactly where they are. You’re giving them the choice to go as fast or as slow as they want.

I’ve got you. Building a funnel doesn’t have to be a tech hellscape. It’s just about following the clues, one at a time, until everything clicks into place.

Lovely work today. You’re one step closer to solving the mystery of your online business!

🕵️‍♀️The Detective’s Summary: Quick Evidence Check

Keep these notes handy for your next investigation:

  • Order Bump: Happens on the checkout page. Think "batteries at the till."

  • Upsell: Happens after payment. Think "the next logical step."

  • Downsell: Happens only if the upsell is declined. Think "the helpful alternative."
